The Diaper Need in South Florida
We all want to teach our children the importance of leaving our communities better than how we found them.
This story is no different.
What started out as a charitable act turned into Florida’s ONLY diaper bank. Jonah Schaechter of Miami, Florida was searching for a community service project for his Bar Mitzvah when he learned of the 1 in 3 families that struggle to provide clean diapers for their children and was determined to enlist the help of his friends, family, school, and temple to start an initiative to collect diapers to distribute to the families who need it most. It was a success! He quickly collected over 1000 diapers!
But when he looked for a place he could drop off the collected diapers, his search left him empty handed. With so many families foregoing other basic needs to be able to change their baby’s dirty diapers, how could there not be help readily available for these families?
Jonah decided he wanted to change that. With the help of his father, Roberto, and his sister, Arielle, their hard work together in this year-round project, they finally registered Miami Diaper Bank as an official 501c3, the first diaper bank in the Miami area.
We wanted to help. We also wanted to give back to the community and families we care so much about.
We sought out to join in the efforts of the national organization No Child Wet Behind, along with over 40 other doula agencies across the United States, to put on a family friendly 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run event as the finale to the coming month’s fundraising and diaper drive efforts. Through this platform, we knew we could really help make a difference in our community if we could find the right local organization that could handle our big goals and make the most difference throughout South Florida.
We met with Roberto, who’s love for babies shown above all else, and Nina, the upbeat woman behind the diaper bank’s promotion and Miami’s enthusiasm for supporting this cause. We wanted to learn more, we wanted to know how it all started, and we wanted to ensure that when we ask for your help, you know it will be benefiting the best.
In the coming months, you will see diaper drop off locations throughout Miami and Broward and fundraising events to help Miami Diaper Bank make the most of our efforts. The finale of these efforts is a 5K and 1 mile Family Fun Run complete with t-shirts, finishing medals for everyone, a vendor expo, raffle, kid’s activities, music, and food. This event will take place May 6th, 2017 at Amelia Earhart Park in Hialeah Florida. We have some lofty goals. We want to donate 15,000 diapers and $10,000 to the Miami Diaper Bank from this event. We know we can reach them with your help!
